Great colleagues = great fun

The title says it all! It’s the difference between a good and a great job – the difference between a fun experience and an I-don’t-want-leave-’cause-I’ll-miss-you-guys.

Let’s make these last few days memorable :-).

How Tailgate parties became the latest craze in Belgium

Yes, I know, the last post is too long ago. Sorry, was just busy having too much FUN.

But I’ll try and make up for it, by telling about my super awesome Sunday (Fun Day)..

When first arriving in the US my colleagues asked what was on my bucket list (not that I was planning to die or anything, but you never know what is crossing your path next – live now!). I managed to do quite a few things (New York off course, Niagara Falls, …) but going to a baseball match wasn’t crossed off yet. AND, by now I had heard about the sport of  ‘tailgating‘. Half of the fun of going to a game is arriving early with food and drinks and just ‘hang’.

So hey, let’s round up some colleagues/friends. We filled the car with Kyle, Beth, Eileen, Dana, chairs, drinks, more drinks, the cutest little grill, food and drinks.

Should we take another cooler with us and leave Annika behind? 😉

Kyle made sure we left on time as we were seeing a mid day game (Mets vs. Astros) and the parking lots fill up quickly with other tailgaters on a Sunday.

Making sure the beer below stays cool

We claimed our spot (and the 2 next to it) and chose a first drink. This is when Eileen pulled out the best present ever: a Mets beer cooler thingy! Perfect.

A dirty bastard in the morning

With the beer cooler thingy in front of the Mets stadium

In case you are wondering about the orange on me: the color of the Mets are orange and blue.

Eileen – pretty nifty!

What a great day: sun, sun, sun. After crisps, cheese, … we started with the cute little grill. Kyle made perfect burgers that were matched with some great Belgian beer (Chimay). I had some Belgian chocolate with me as dessert. So relaxing and fun, I’ve decided this will be the next craze in Belgium next summer. Be sure to keep a close eye on the news from overseas ;-).

Quote of the day: We’re probable the only ones tailgating with Belgian beer AND Belgian chocolate.. Oh, AND a Belgian!

Some more beer to flush that burger down?

Oh yeah, better not forget to go see some baseball in the stadium behind us

The parking lot was almost full before we realized it. Time to get out our tickets and see the game! Everybody was great at explaining the rules to me. It’s pretty different from what I remember from playing something similar at home.

We baked in the sun and got to see a home run in the 2nd inning, which made the big apple pop out of the stage.  Between innings there were little games, like the kiss cam, the bongo cam, … we also managed a little wave, shouted ‘let’s go Mets, let’s go!’ and tried some stadium beer.

The last inning was pretty exciting. The Astros managed to get a run and were tied with the Mets. That was just before Ike Davis managed to do a ‘Walk-Off Homer‘ and the stadium exploded in cheers. You can check out this magical moment here. You’ll see the ball just bumping off the dividing wall.

Well, the Mets now have a fan for life and I have a Mets foam finger as a souvenir to remind me of this absolutely amazing experience. A big thank you to my colleagues for helping me scratch this of my bucket list!

Great fun, baseball after Chimay

How I met (up with) my girlfriend!

To avoid any confusion: Annika allowed me to write a blog instead of herself because it’s been such a great trip; so this one is written by her boyfriend Sander.

What a joy! First I get to visit my beloved girlfriend 5.000 miles away and now I get to relive it all again by writing it all down. I really really really really wanted to visit her this time, because as most of you readers know, Annika has a travelling spirit and she loves to explore the world (and make blogs about it). Last year she left for Australia for 9 months and I didn’t get the chance to go there at all because of my studies. Partially because of this eternal feeling of guilt and of course because I wanted to see her REALLY badly, I puzzled my schedule together until I was 100% sure she’d be stuck with me for 10 days :-). And guess what – it was awesome!

We made loads of plans long before I even started packing: road trip, Niagara Falls, Washington DC, Gettysburg, New York, Broadway, The Jersey Shore (yeah, the real one), rodeo – and those were only the ones we actually could do with the time we had! My personal wish list pretty much had 1 big word in it: ‘HAMBURGER’. As in, I wanted to try every fast food chain available and see which one I liked most. An impossible task in 10 days, you say? Well, no guts, no glory!

I flew in pretty comfortably with a stop in London, only to arrive sleep depraved in Newark (babies should have a separate compartment in airplanes). A pretty big storm was brewing, so I was a little afraid things would get complicated, but we landed on schedule. Annika was waiting for me at the parking lot in the pouring rain and we hurried ‘home’ to get a few hours of sleep before we kicked off. Annika woke me up at half past waytooearly (she’s pretty good at that, really) and we hit the road. Annika already made a blog about our mini roadtrip – it was great! Highlights for me were walking underneath Niagara falls, posing in front of the White House while trying not to look too suspicious towards the hordes of security people, and visiting an epic video game exhibition in a Smithsonian museum. Unfortunately, Annika had to go to work from Tuesday, leaving me to visit New York at ease :-).

As soon as I walked in the streets of NYC I knew I had hit the right place. It is an awe-inspiring place to be and I have to admit I liked it a lot more than Washington. It’s great fun to walk around surrounded by towering skyscrapers, shops and restaurants all around, loads of people with all languages and noisy cars on every corner. I (or rather – Annika) got me a 3 day New York Pass, which is seriously worth it considering I nearly earned the entire buying price back just on the first day. I decided to start off with the skylines – visiting the Empire State building (people were not very hospitable though) and the Top of the Rockefeller Center (people were VERY hospitable).  Although I took loads of pictures of myself with 1 hand stretched out, I frequently ‘traded’ taking pictures with other people – something they seriously should integrate in their tourism policy.

Another ‘top’ of the day was the tour through the NBC studios. I managed to snatch the last ticket in the last tour of the day without reservation (perks of travelling alone, muhaha!) and got to see the Nightly News studio, the Dr. Oz studio and loads of cool stuff inside the tower. Definitely worthwile! I also visited the great ‘Ripley’s believe it or not’ exhibition, complete with living cockroaches and the world’s biggest beer can.

The second day I took to the harbor, visiting some stuff and seeing the remarkable and very interesting ‘Bodies’ exhibition with real human bodies. But more importantly, I stood in line for discount tickets for Broadway! Well, we actually went off-broadway, seeing the musical ‘Avenue Q’. If you haven’t heard from it: it’s where this awesome song comes from. Annika and I had a great night full of laughs and it was definitely worth it the (only) 61 dollars per ticket! If you like musicals, go see it. Seriously, do it!

The last day of my New York Pass 3-day’er was spent visiting 2 rather ‘special’ exhibition: the NY spy exhibition, filled with not-so-James-Bond but some very ingenious inventions (spraying female dog feromones on a doormat to have a male dag sniff out the person who walked over it – funky!), and secondly, the Museum of Sex. This ‘unique’ museum only grants entry to adults (and rightfully so!) and has a rather interesting collection of objects, films, pictures and genuinely nice art, but it also has some very informative displays about the history of sexuality. Besides, it has the coolest entry warning of any museum in history:

Annika and I had some superb cheese cake at The Cheesecake Factory that night, after which we invaded Target. scrambling for some great t-shirts for me and souvenirs. Annika couldn’t resist the shoe displays either!

Friday I spent most of the day on a nearly full day visit to NY’s must see: lady liberty and Ellis Island. Both the statue and the museum are very nice, but I must concur with my girlfriend: I too always imagined her bigger. Annika took me out Friday night to meet up with Dana, one of her colleagues in Hoboken, and we had a great time together with her and her boyfriend Ryan. They also made a few great pictures of us with a beautiful NY skyline by night.

In my last weekend (*sniff*) Annika had a treat for me. It was a perilous and long drive, but we went to Wildwood, one of the most southern points of the Jersey Shore to enjoy the nice weather. After only 2 hours we had to leave again, because we were heading for a real, western rodeo show at Cowtown Rodeo! I was really looking forward to this one, and it was pretty spectacular. I mostly enjoyed the ‘bull wrestling’ part, where cowboys had to chase a young bull on horseback, JUMP OFF the horse ON TOP OF the bull and friggin’ wrestle it to the ground! I mean, how badass is that! We enjoyed it thoroughly and I am so glad Annika took me to see it.

Sunday we were planning to go to New York for the final day, but luckily we decided against it and went to the Jersey shore again! :p We went to a great beach a bit closer by (Belmar), where we forgot to put sun lotion on our feet and burned them quite badly! But at least the weather was great! We finished my visit with a final shopping spree and a final Burger King meal. When driving to the airport, a big storm was brewing – exactly like the one at the moment of my arrival. Coincidence? You decide! We said goodbye (“It’s only for 4 weeks!” – “’Only’ 4 weeks? That’s a bloody month!”) and parted, after which I arrived a little late but safely back in Belgium.

My stay in the US was -in one word- incredible. I saw, learned, enjoyed, cried of laughter, observed, wondered, walked, sunbathed, visited, boated, drove, shopped, conversed AND I got to see Annika for 10 whole (well, some of them were half) days! For me, it was a bit of paradise. And there’s still so much more! I didn’t set foot in Central Park, didn’t cruise the Manhattan shoreline, or didn’t visit any American Indian museum, or… But I did have a great great time and I will surely be going back someday, east or west coast, we’ll see about that. Thanks to Kate, Dave, Dana and Ryan (and Annika of course – d’uh!) for making my stay the best!

Oh, and before I forget: the winner of Best Fast Food Chain is: … … *rumble* Burger King! Seriously, they’re great, and their hamburgers are the BIGGEST of all I’ve seen. (I didn’t get to check out Five guys, however. Annika says they’re even better, so now, I will HAVE to come back.)

See you next time, USA! And this time, you won’t get rid of me this easily 😉

The little road trip

What a joy, Sander is flying in on Thursday evening, and oh boy, do we have plans.. Australia might already be over a year ago, the urge to drive, explore, … is still strong!

The Belgian tourist, with the American T-shirt, British accent, heading to Canada

Our rough plan takes us first to Niagara Falls, leaving Morris Plains early morning, arriving in the afternoon, but not before stopping to make sure Sander gets his first hamburger and donut. An American adventure isn’t complete without the grease.

Oreo donut (yes, it doesn’t have a hole!)

The sun shines over us and we see that the end of the rainbow (and pot of gold?) is in the water right before the falls. We enjoy strolling next to the falls, getting wet by the mist (soo refreshing), laugh at the Americans on the other side (you can hardly see a thing from that side) and go behind the falls.

Ready to go behind the falls

The American falls in the back

We spend the evening in St Catharines with our friend Kate. She point us to a great lounge called Mahtay – something like our student bar, but the 2.0 version. Before we leave in the morning, we head to the farmers market for breakfast: yum!

Red velvet cupcake – Farmers market St Catharines

Getting out of Canada is a lot harder then getting in, time-wise. An hour of waiting at the border to ask questions and check the trunk leaves us behind schedule (if we even have a schedule).

One of MANY on our route

Other great signs: ‘Buckle up, for the next million miles’

We arrive in Gettysburg late afternoon and learn about American history. No one less than Morgan Freeman narrates the introduction movie in the museum which makes it impossible not to like. We learn a lot about this important battle of American history and explore some of the sites by car before leaving to Alexandria to meet up with our friend Dave.

Fencing like in the old days

Just like Kate, we met Dave via the website couchsurfing. This time, we both (guest and host) have more time to spend and try out home-made beer, head out for a pub-meal in the Irish pub in the old town (Georgetown) where we meet ‘Pat’ and enjoy his drinking songs (best Irish pub ever!!! Too bad we have some trouble uploading videos) AND we do a very unique ‘Washington by Midnight – tour’. Truly a once in a lifetime experience.

Now THAT is how you park your truck in a downtown garage (Dave’s)

Washington by Midnight

We have 2 days planned for Washington D.C., the first taking us to Mount Vernon (again some nice history lessons), a whiskey distillery and finally downtown, where we do an evening visit to the Museum of Natural History (Dinosaurs!) and relax in our hostel.

Or am I not?

Just one day left: visit The White House (Obama was home), get up the Old Post Office tower, discover the video game exposition in the art museum (great, but it lacked Pokemon) and the Air and Space museum.

The final proof: Sander is hotter

The day ends in Shoprite, where Sander picks the pop-tarts he wants to try to complete the America experience.

To summarize: 4 days, 2 countries, 7 states, more than 1100 miles (1800 kms) = great fun!

I can’t wait to explore some more!

How I met Captain Jack Sparrow II

This is also the story about how Joe DiMartino almost caught Captain! Jack! Sparrow!.. on camera.

Do you want to know what I do for work? It’s not so easy to explain, but I’m happy to share with you one of the days that jumps out. Although, when you are able to work in an overseas office, all days jump out, at least for me.

Unloading containers in the port

Today I can join Joe and Sam on a port visit. I can see how a container ship is unloaded and even go aboard! We need to show our ID and go to the Captain to ask for permission to head up to the bridge. Well, let’s say that we couldn’t believe our eyes when we met him.

The Captain (just missing a parrot on his shoulder) and me

He sees what we are all thinking and introduces himself as Captain Jack Sparrow the Second (true story!). Others ask what I’m afraid to say: I want a picture with this guy!  Long hair, ear rings, … This is THE Captain of all captains, the inspiration for Johnny Depp’s role in Pirates of the Caribbean. Joe grabs my camera, and also Neil grabs his Blackberry. Thank god for Neil! This day will be remembered as the day Joe almost caught Captain Jack Sparrow on camera, as the picture he thought he took wasn’t there!

We have a look around The Black Pearl II and everybody turns 10 years old again when we see the captains seat. Yes, we all get to sit and pose, find out how steering works (almost all auto-pilot + no big rudder anymore), …

Captain Annika

Off course we are talking about business as well but there is no harm in enjoying your work now is there? 😉

As we are in the area, lunch needs to include a Philly cheese steak. We don’t end up going to the classics, where this greasy meal originates and where you get yelled at if you don’t order it in the right way. I do find out what cheez whiz is and put Pat’s on my bucket list.

Philly cheese steak with Joe and Sam

Still so much to tell you on my blog! What to tell first? An analysis of the US food, more specific the burgers? How much fun I had on the 21st of July with some unplanned Belgian visitors? A list of all the ‘interesting’ vocabulary I have learned here? Why don’t YOU tell me what you like to read about or see pictures of.

Last thing for today which will blow your mind:

It is possible to travel on a cargo-ship as a regular passenger. There were 5 Germans getting of the vessel we visited. If ever interested (Joe put it on his bucket list), have a look around the internet, like this website. I’m sure it’s a true adventure!

*edit: this is the link if you want to hop-on this ship’s route: http://www.cruisepeople.co.uk/icl.htm , thanks Neil for the details!*

How I Met Cees from the Candy Hall of Fame

It’s a rainy day in New Jersey. I can’t complain as this is the first bad weather day in the 3 weeks I’m here. I’ve had nothing but heat waves and I’ve loved every degree (Celsius and Fahrenheit) of it!

No need to be sad. I turn on 103.5 KTU (The Beat of New York) and cruise from Boonton to Morris Plains. It’s impossible to arrive at the office without a smile. I’m also curious what is happening for lunch today..

Under the moto ‘nobody gets left behind’, every living soul (from trainee to VP) in the office departs to Chadham where we are having lunch at the Brasa Grille. After driving around in the rain and trying to find the nearest parking spot (mind you, even without bad weather it seems to be a true sport to find that spot that will keep you from walking any further than strictly needed in the US, and then still complain about it), Kyle and Joe let us 3 ladies out right at the front door so we can walk straight in to say… HOI!

Casual Friday Lunch

I can use my native tongue for a change as Cees Boon is a Dutchman. He doesn’t seem to have the strong accent and might have fooled me if I hadn’t know. ‘We’ invited him (or was it the other way around?) for a going-away dinner. He’s the ‘granddad’ of our Palatinit products in the US and it is via his job that in 2010 he was honored in the Candy Hall of Fame, which is not something I’m making up. From what I’ve understood it’s quite prestigious and according to Cees, it’s not very often you’re still alive and in good shape at the time of entry.

Cees is very happy with the Cuban Cigars (that were smuggled from Canada, or so the rumors go) and box.

After working our way through a huge fish/steak/paella and flan/sawdust/dinosaur egg and Kyle ending up with a lot of glasses in front of him..  we end up back in the office and decide we need some pictures of us at work as well, before everyone starts thinking that I’m having too much fun… 😉

All empty

“Down The Shore”

DTS – the place to be on a Sunday! It’s a Jersey thing, not mentioning the word beach.

Some funny clouds hanging over the beach

Dana (colleague and go-to-girl) and I meet up at a parking lot and drive down to Point Pleasant, where we find a free parking lot, including free walk down the street. We head to the Tiki Bar with our beach chairs, where (after ID-checking) we set up our spot on a 21+ beach.

Those are real trees – Tiki Bar

Cocktail time!

Dana getting a good pic of the cocktails

The best Strawberry Daiqiri ever

We decide to take a little appetizer, safe some room for pizza later. Or so we thought…

Just an apitizer..

Too good, and too much!

Time to get a tan. Even though there were clouds, I ended up with some reds and browns.

Beach fun

We even feel brave enough to dive in the ocean. Maybe I should have been a little more careful. After 3 waves I’ve lost my sunglassen, gulpt in some salt and end up with a red patch on my back where the sand helped me get rid of my old skin. Dana ends op with some cuts on her knees. But hey, we did it!

We end the day with enjoying a frozen custard ice-cream, or a better description: a race-against-the-clock-try-to-eat-it-quicker-then-it-melts.

We find the car back in one piece, thanks to the BumperBully.

BumperBully – your cars best friend

Can’t wait to go back!

How I met… Deep Fried Oreos

This is what you get when a ‘smoutebol’ and an ‘Oreo biscuit’ fall in love

I did already hear about them from a colleague, but it just got real this morning.

I was walking around on Broadway (must-see) on Saturday and was actually looking for a cupcake as breakfast/brunch. There was a big street fair with food and this-and-thats.

Deep fried Oreos are sold 6/5 dollar, with lots of sugar on them (just like a Belgian smoutebol). Very yummy but also very heavy on the stomach.

Why not try it at home?

New York City in 2 days

NY in the morning

First weekend, couldn’t wait to explore New York! My prep work:

– Frommer’s New York City (2012)

– advice from friends/colleagues

– room/bed booked in ‘New York Budget Inn

– 2 day ‘New York Pass‘ with bus tours included

– many hours on the internet

– print-out of the mta/subway system

Will it be enough though to tackle this huge city? I take an early train on Saturday morning which means I hardly stand in a waiting line for the Empire State Building. The view is amazing! The New York Sky-ride is in the same building (make sure you check this out before heading up the building, I had to return. Or maybe not, the reviews are HORRIBLE :-). Only do it if you have a New York Pass and it comes at no additional charge + you have time to spare .)

View from Empire

Typical cab

Next on my to-do-list is hop onto a hop-on-hop-off bus doing the downtown tour. It’s relaxing sitting on top and enjoying both the sun and surroundings (and fun facts and history on New York, like why cabs are yellow). My first hop off is at the South Seaport, to visit the exhibition ‘Bodies’, something similar to ‘Körperwelten’ but with the famous Doctor Oz.

NYC = full of good stuff

The truck

My next hop takes me to the MoMA (Museum of Modern Art), but not before I grab myself a hotdog on the street: mmm! The MoMA is way too big. I feel like I could get lost in it the whole day. Surprises all around, like a little garden, a full size helicopter, … but I don’t want to spoil it for you readers. Definitively worth your visit.

Who wants a hotdog?

Mmm!

‘Art’ in MoMA

By now it’s late afternoon and I decide to have a go at the mta before it gets dark and head to my hostel to check in. The Budget Inn is only open since last week, but it’s a nice neighborhood and friendly staff. I made the right choice. After a brief look in my travel guide I decide to find a hamburger place… but let’ s leave that story for another blog-post ;-).

More rats, on Time Squar

Before I hop once more, I visit the Spy-exhibition, a new attraction according to my booklet. 2 kids are having great fun with the laser-maze but I find out it’s a lot harder then it looks. I hurry up to get line for the night tour and see the sunset over the Brooklyn Bridge, the lights of Broadway, … *sigh*, how lucky am I?

Top of the Rock

But the day isn’t over yet! Top of the Rock seems like a perfect ending. I enjoy seeing the city by night and once down again I walk around Time Square, and flee together with the other people once the rain starts. My eyes feel heavy and my body fees happy when it finally hits the hostel-matress.

You don’t think I sleep in right? By 8 a.m. I’m already checked out and heading downtown to Battery Park where I take the ferry to see Lady Liberty. I always imagined her bigger, but still, she is very impressive. The ferry also takes me to Ellis Island ad the Immigration Museum. Before I know it, it’s almost lunch time. I should have planned more time in for this. It’s not so expensive, so maybe you can do it without the Pass.

The Uptown-tour-bus picks me up after lunch and I catch a first glimpse of Central Park. People are riding their bikes, sunbathing, … I can’t wait to head in to explore, but decide for another weekend. There’s another museum waiting for me: the Guggenheim. The building immediately catches your eye and also inside there is plenty to discover. I really enjoy the pictures from Dijkstra and when I reach the top of the building, I finally discover where the music is coming from. People are sitting on the floor in a dark room and a projector shows a girl dancing. Everybody ends up turning 180 degrees, surprised by the next dance on another wall. I look up and see multiple projectors, waiting to show their secret. I love every minute!

Ripley’s Believe it or Not! – the final visit with my Pass, turns out to be quite a quirky one. My tired feet take their last steps towards New York Penn station. What a weekend!
